Dogs are ubiquitous in Germany, where they often serve as fashion accessories or as surrogate children. In theory, they’re generally supposed to be kept on a leash unless rather small, and their owners are expected to clean up after them; though neither of these rules is universally enforced or adhered to.
Tightly regulated and heavily taxed, pet ownership in Germany has its price. Pit bulls and their ilk are not welcome. Cats, though common, are rarely seen.
