Discovering a new country may be adventurous but settling down in a country is possibly one of the biggest adventures in one's life. The integration into the EU and the downsizing of the administrative machinery in the late 1990s Germany made it easier for Non-German-speakers to handle bureaucratic obstacles.
Within the third month in Germany or before taking up employment it is necessary to register for a permit of residence, an Aufenthaltserlaubnis. Citizens of the older member countries of the EU enjoy unrestricted mobility to stay and to work in Germany, holders of an EU passport from the more recent entrants are more restricted. Contact the EU service office.
The registration office for all foreigners, the Ausländerbehörde, is a department in the civic centre, the Bürgerbüro, which you can find in the city centre, tram station Markt.
