Dusseldorf is sometimes referred to as "little Tokyo on the Rhine" and this is due to its strong Japanese community. The first Japanese person was registered in 1905. A rapid expansion of Japanese companies occurred in 1955 and today no other city in Germany has a larger Japanese population.
Four Japanese language kindergarten and the Japanese International School, started in 1971, form the basis forJapanese education. The school teaches a wide range of subjects, like mathematics, industrial arts or homemaking and is officially approved by the Japanese government as Japanese school abroad.
