Home to the Dusseldorf Symphonic, the Tonhalle has been Düsseldorf's musical landmark for over 25 years. Built on the banks of the river Rhine in 1926 as a planetarium, it was rebuilt and transformed into a modern, multi-purpose concert hall in 1978.
Rebuilt again in 2005, the acoustic technicians proposed a creative solution utilising the form of the planetarium. A visually opaque, acoustically transparent dome conceals reflectors to avoid sound focus points - the sound is redirected upwards as far as possible.
Many scale models were evaluated to create a reflector-geometry optimized to reducing echos. Moreover, podium acoustics were improved to optimize the contact of the musicians and the chairs were optimised so that higher reverberation times resulted.
The realization of the project was a challenge and all new technical installations had to be integrated into a very complex geometric construction. The result is an architectural and an acoustical marvel which allows the Tonhalle Düsseldorf to compete with other world class music halls.
During the past 25 years, over 5 million visitors have attended 4800 concerts at the Tonhalle Düsseldorf. Every year the Tonhalle stages more than 220 events in the large auditorium with 1,850 seats, the chamber music hall with 300 seats and the Rotunde in the lobby with 200-400 seats for lectures and café-concerts. The Box office is open all day and in the evening as is the bistro in the lobby and the historic green vault with its world famous glass collection.
Anne-Sophie Mutter, Cecilia Bartoli, Arcadi Volodos, the Berliner Philharmonic, London Philharmonic, Yo-Yo Ma, Daniel Barenboim - the list of world-famous soloists, orchestras and ensembles that have played here reads like the Who's Who of the international music scene.
And if you prefer Jazz or Chanson, Soul or Cabaret, in the Tonhalle you can hear such artists as Cassandra Wilson, Julien Clerc, Jaques Loussier, Bobby McFerrin or Whinton Marsalis live on stage.
