Nearby Dusseldorf is the provincial capital of North Rhine-Westphalia. This position correlates with a lot of functions and responsibilities towards the citizens living in it and the presence of certain institutions.
Firstly the city is seat of the government of NRW, North Rhine-Westphalia. The Premier has always been a member of one of the the two largest parties CDU (Christian Democratic Union) or SPD (Social Democratic Party). He or she, who may also be part of a coalition or form even a minority government, represents the federal state, Bundesland, also in Berlin when new laws, debates and decisions are discussed at the level of the federal republic of Germany.
Secondly there is the district government, Bezirksregierung of Dusseldorf. NRW is divided into five district governments, which mediate between NRW, local communities and their citizens. Dusseldorf district is the largest with more than five million inhabitants. Their function is to decide on demands of public and private interests. Some departments are concerned with the security of the police or the control of correct production and distribution of food, with others relevant for city planning or the protection of historic buildings and so on.
The insurance office, Landesversicherungsamt LVA of the State, Bundesland of NRW is of note too. This institution holds legal supervision over social insurance as well as medical and trade associations.
The Chamber of Industry and Commerce, Industrie- und Handelskammer IHK of Mittlerer Niederrhein represents the interests of associated firms that are acting in the segments industry, trade and service. One task is the support of companies that takes on trainees and especially the guarding of the trainees themselves.
